Alecia Barry Underhill
Alecia Barry Underhill is a professional artist specializing in equine subject matter. She is a graduate of Rhode Island School of Design, with a BFA in Illustration, and is an associate member of the American Academy of Equine Art. She produced the alphabet poster, Horses from A to Z, and has added Alphadogs to the series.
“I paint flowers and animals – horses, chicks, dogs – for their beauty, the connection we human beings have to them, and the sense of history and nostalgia for simpler times. I like to paint close-up views that arrest the viewer and perhaps make you see something that you wouldn’t ordinarily notice. I am not interested in painting perfect, idealized versions. The imperfections and variations that make each animal unique are what interest me.”
She spent her teenage years working with horses at a riding stable and Morgan farm in Connecticut, and continues to ride her Morgan mares, Belle and Unique. She and her husband, Michael, live on a farm in Connecticut with their son, Max, their horses, an English Shepherd dog, and two cats.
Here are a few examples of her work.
